What's Wrong with Anant? 5 Common Issues & Fixes for Valorant Players

If you’ve spent any time playing Valorant over the last few seasons, you’ve probably seen players spam match chat or Reddit threads asking what's wrong with Anant. The newest Initiator agent launched with a ton of hype, promising game-changing recon and area denial tools that were supposed to shake up the meta entirely. But instead of dominating ranked lobbies, he’s become a running joke in many communities, with players listing off bug after bug and inconsistent mechanic that makes him feel unplayable half the time. I’ve mained Anant for 120+ hours since his launch, and I’ve run into every glitch, bad interaction, and balance issue you can imagine while climbing from Platinum to Immortal rank. This guide breaks down the biggest problems with the agent, and what you can do to work around them if you still want to main him.

Core Design Flaws That Explain What's Wrong with Anant

First, the core design of Anant’s kit has flaws that were obvious even in public test server (PTS) feedback that Riot chose to ignore for launch. His signature ability, Recon Pulse, is supposed to mark all enemies within a 12m radius for 8 seconds, but the activation delay is longer than every other recon ability in the game, clocking in at 1.2s from trigger to mark. That means enemies have more than enough time to duck behind cover or destroy the pulse before it ever gives you useful information. The other big design issue is his ultimate, Area Lockdown, which is supposed to slow enemies by 70% and prevent them from using abilities, but it doesn’t apply to agents who are already mid-ability animation when it goes off. I’ve had Jett players dash straight through my lockdown, Reyna players dismiss out of it, and even Sage players raise walls right after it activates, making it feel completely useless for retake scenarios. These aren’t bugs, they’re intentional design choices that make his kit feel weak compared to other Initiators like Sova or Fade, who have far more reliable recon and utility.

Most Common Bugs Plaguing Anant Right Now

Beyond intentional design flaws, there are dozens of active bugs that make playing Anant feel like a coin flip every match. I’ve reported at least 12 separate bugs to Riot support over the last three months, and only 2 of them have been fixed as of this writing. Many of these bugs have been reported hundreds of times by players, so it’s confusing that Riot hasn’t addressed them faster, especially when so much of the conversation around the agent is centered on what's wrong with Anant instead of his positive traits. The most frequent issues you’ll run into include:

  • Recon Pulse sticking to agent abilities instead of map surfaces: I’ve had my pulse stick to Sage walls, Viper smokes, and even Kay/O’s knife before, making it completely useless before it ever activates
  • Inconsistent hitbox on his deployable cover: Anant’s Barrier Shield is supposed to block all incoming fire, but there’s a 2-inch gap at the bottom of the shield that lets enemy bullets go straight through, even if you’re crouching fully behind it
  • Ability cooldown bugs after reviving a teammate: If you use any ability right before reviving a Sage or Skye res, your cooldowns will reset to their full duration, even if you already had 1 second left on a Recon Pulse cooldown
  • Ultimate charge bug when you get assists from Recon Pulse marks: You only get 20% of the ultimate charge you’re supposed to get for kills or assists on enemies marked by your Recon Pulse, meaning you’ll get your ultimate 2-3 rounds later than other Initiators on average

These bugs aren’t just minor annoyances. I’ve lost multiple ranked matches because my Barrier Shield let a Vandal bullet through to headshot me mid-retake, or my Recon Pulse stuck to a random smoke instead of the wall I was aiming at. Riot has acknowledged most of these bugs on their official public bug tracker, but they’ve given no timeline for fixes, which is frustrating for players who want to main the agent.

How Anant Fits Into the Current Valorant Meta

Even if all the bugs were fixed tomorrow, Anant would still struggle to find a place in most team comps, both in ranked play and professional tournaments. His biggest problem is that every other Initiator does what he does better, with fewer downsides. Sova has longer range recon that doesn’t require you to get close to dangerous angles, Fade has recon that tracks enemies even if they move behind cover, and Skye has healing and flash utility alongside her recon tools. A lot of pro players have refused to pick him in scrims or tournaments for exactly this reason, and most tier lists put him in C or D tier because of what's wrong with Anant compared to other Initiators. That means you only really want to pick Anant on very specific maps, like Bind or Haven, where his Barrier Shield can be used to block off narrow chokepoints. I’ve had decent success picking him on Bind’s A site retakes, where I can place a Barrier Shield to block the entrance from short, and use Recon Pulse to check for enemies hiding behind site boxes. But even on those maps, you’re usually better off picking a more reliable agent, especially if you’re playing with randoms who won’t coordinate with your utility. You should never pick Anant in ranked play above Diamond rank right now, because enemy teams will know how to play around his weak utility and bugs, and you’ll be putting your team at a significant disadvantage before the first round even starts.

Workarounds to Make Anant Playable Right Now

If you’re still set on playing Anant despite all the flaws, there are a few workarounds I’ve picked up over 100+ hours of playing him that can reduce how often you run into bugs and make his kit feel more consistent. First, always aim your Recon Pulse at hard, flat surfaces like concrete walls or metal boxes, not at soft surfaces like wooden crates or fabric curtains, which are far more likely to make the pulse bounce or stick to random utility. Second, when you place your Barrier Shield, always stand a few inches back from it instead of pressing right up against it, to avoid taking damage from the gap at the bottom of the shield. Third, don’t use any abilities for 2 seconds before you revive a teammate, to avoid the cooldown reset bug. You should also communicate with your team every time you use your ultimate, so they can push in right as it activates, before enemies can escape or use abilities to get out of it. I’ve won plenty of rounds with Anant by coordinating my ultimate with a team push, even with all the flaws. It’s not ideal, but it’s possible to have fun and win games with him if you know how to play around his weaknesses.

At the end of the day, it’s not hard to see why so many players are asking what's wrong with Anant. He’s an agent with a ton of potential that was rushed to launch with half-finished design choices and dozens of game-breaking bugs that still haven’t been fixed months later. If Riot adjusts his ability timings, fixes the active bugs, and gives him a small buff to his ultimate charge rate, he could easily become a top-tier Initiator in the future. Until then, you’re better off picking a more reliable agent for most ranked matches, but if you love his kit and don’t mind dealing with occasional glitches, the workarounds in this guide will help you get the most out of him. I’m still holding out hope that Riot will give him the fixes he deserves, because I’ve had some of my most fun Valorant matches playing him when his kit actually works as intended.
